Reno of the Month: Kitchen Cabinet Design Guide

Recently, I was talking to a friend from out of town who was thinking about redecorating his house. Although her house was built in the early 1970s, her personal aesthetic is more modern and she is considering a modern renovation of her kitchen.
We were discussing kitchen design and I casually asked, “What style of cabinet doors are you considering?” It wasn’t a trick question, but it turned out she didn’t think too much about it. After interviewing others, I realized that this is a topic that many people don’t really consider or pay attention to until they need to be highlighted – usually in remodeling when it’s either too difficult to explore or their reenactors use limited cabinet options.
Depending on the home remodeling company or general contractor you use to remodel your kitchen, cabinet choices can be very wide or very narrow! At Synergy, we work with many different cabinet manufacturers and our preferred partners offer a variety of cabinet collections at different prices and with no color or style restrictions! Previously, we could even match the color of the kitchen cabinet to the client’s favorite wallet. For other general contractors or smaller companies, you may be limited to three or four door styles and limited color options. Before you sign the dotted line, it’s worth asking this question to make sure you understand what options you have and if it’s right for you.
Since kitchen cabinets will be one of the biggest items in your renovation budget and can have a big impact on the appeal of your home’s design, it’s important to get what you want. Having said that, here is a quick guide to kitchen cabinets so you can make the perfect choice for your kitchen.
Not sure how a home improvement design and construction company differs from a general contractor? Then read this!
Let’s start with the basics: frameless or face cabinets. For frameless cabinets, there is no frame around the cabinet box, and the cabinet door is fixed directly inside the box. Despite benefits such as ease of use and storage space, the main attraction is the seamless and more modern look offered by frameless cabinets due to their little “show” (spaces around cabinet doors and drawer heads).
Face frame cabinets have a frame that covers the edge of the cabinet frame with door hinges attached to the frame itself. Face frame cabinets are generally better for all types of coverage (i.e. how the cabinet frame appears around doors and drawer heads) and sometimes have the added benefit of being more accessible. However, a lot depends on the type of overlay you choose (read below).
There is no right or wrong choice, it all comes down to personal preference. The image below shows the difference between frameless and facade cabinets.
There are three different types of cabinet cover: partial cover, full cover, and recessed. With more traditional partially covered front frame cabinets, you will see a lot of framed cabinets. However, newer and more modern face frame cabinets often have “full cover” doors. With new finishes and manufacturing methods, it can be difficult to distinguish frameless cabinets from front-frame cabinets once installed, as shown in the example below. However, cabinets with a full face frame are not the same as cabinets without a frame. Fully covered cabinets still show about 1/4 inch of frame exposure around doors and drawers, while frameless cabinets show little to no frame.
Next is a hidden door. For built-in cabinets, the doors do not sit in front of the cabinet’s front frame, but sit directly inside the frame (“flush”)—the entire cabinet frame between all doors and drawers is open to the classic Craftsman. Watch. To add more detail and uniqueness to built-in wardrobes, they are sometimes offered with decorative exposed hinges in a variety of finishes. Generally, recessed doors will be more expensive.
Now that you’ve chosen frameless or front framed cabinets, let’s take a look at the most popular door styles.
Vibrating cabinet doors are still the first choice for many. Their clean lines and clean look mean they remain a popular choice for designs that have stood the test of time. Shaker cabinets pair perfectly with a more transitional design that blends traditional and modern design. Recently there has been a general change to all white shaker kitchen cabinets. It all started with light contrasting islands, but now blue, green and wooden elements are equally appropriate.
When it comes to a more modern look, flat panel cabinets are the way to go. Cabinets with paneled doors are usually frameless and look very stylish. They are versatile and can be with or without handles for a more modern look, but handles and handles are also available. As with swing door cabinets, flat cabinet colors can also be mixed for contrast.
There are no rules about using one style of cabinet doors in your kitchen design. If you like the look of the shaker but want it to look modern, you can pair it with a flat front. The fact is that all the doors are in one style, and all the drawers are in another. In the example below, the cabinet door is shaker style but with a flat drawer for a more modern look.

Divorce decrees do not always announce the end of a relationship. More often, the decree forced the two to “reconsider” their connection. Some become good friends, while others become mortal enemies, avoiding their former places and mutual friends. Worst of all, when one or both parties try to score on divorce proceedings, both will be senselessly immersed in the darkness of their memory.
