As a company founded in 1780, few manufacturing businesses can trace their roots back to Henry Squire & Sons, which began manufacturing padlocks and cabinet locks.
Nearly 250 years later, the Wolverhampton-based company manufactures state-of-the-art security equipment and locks in a state-of-the-art 32,185 sq. ft.
Eight generations later, West Midlands remains a family business. It supplied the British Army during the Napoleonic Wars, it was responsible for the world’s first heavy-duty combination lock, and it’s probably the world’s most accomplished lockmaker – a truly globally recognized brand. As the company has grown so has its production needs and this is where Dugard stepped in to support the great British brand.
While the Dugard may not have been conceived in the 1700s, the South Coast machine tool specialist has a rich pedigree — he delivered his first Dugard Eagle 1000 to Henry Squire & Sons more than 20 years ago.

So when we need more help, we turn to the Dugard experts.”
Commenting on the latest investment, Mr. Green said: “We used to manufacture locks on machining centers, but that created productivity and cost issues for us. We have now invested in a new line of Dugard RMV700 APC two-pallet machines.
“Usually when you come across double pallet machines in the industry, they tend to be horizontal machines, which are much more expensive than vertical machines. For the price of a horizontal double pallet, we can buy two vertical pallets from the workshop and let them make a lock for us.”
In terms of specifications, the Dugard RMV700 APC Dual Tray VMC has an X, Y and Z travel of 700 x 400 x 400mm with two rotating 700 x 400mm double trays. The pallet can withstand loads up to 160 kg and can be rotated 180° in two seconds.
When selecting the HSK63A or BT40 spindle taper, the machine spindle speed reaches 12,000 rpm. It is equipped with a powerful 15kW spindle motor that generates high torque for heavy-duty machining.

When considering an investment decision, Mr. Green recalls: “We looked at the cycle times for our products on various machines, and what struck us about Dugard was the unique Z-axis that can move up at the same speed as the head. This effectively doubles the Z-axis speed and shortens the cycle time to produce more padlocks per day.”
“Dugard APC has a 40 station tool turret, which is a big advantage because we can reduce the number of tool changes and the time people spend changing machines. We may be in a new facility, but that doesn’t mean we have acres of spaces to play in. The relatively small footprint of the APC RMV700 means we can move them around the facility to meet business needs.
“By the end of 2022, we will have six 2-pallet machines to help us make padlocks and bike locks. We need to keep the spindles running, and Dugard’s 2-pallet machines fit the bill,” he concludes.
