MINNEAPOLIS. On Tuesday, the storm will bring snow to the Upper Midwest in what could be the snowiest event of this relatively young Minneapolis winter.
Light snow will fall in western Nebraska and South Dakota on Monday evening as the low pressure area moves away from the Rocky Mountains, according to the Fox Forecast Center.
Snow coverage and intensity will increase Tuesday, stretching from Colorado to Minnesota, as the depression begins to deepen.
Heavy snow is expected in eastern Nebraska, southern Minnesota and northwestern Wisconsin during the afternoon of Tuesday. This is where the total amount of snow will be heaviest, probably at least 3 inches, and in some areas perhaps 6 inches.
A winter storm warning is in effect for northwest Wisconsin with 4-7 inches of snowfall and sporadic 10 inches of snowfall, while a winter weather warning extends from most of Nebraska to western Iowa, southern Minnesota, and the southeast corner of South Dakota.
The Minneapolis-St. Paul Twin Cities area is among those expected to snow, with 3-6 inches of snow likely to fall during the day on Tuesday, which could disrupt morning and evening commutes. This could affect travel on Interstates 80, 90, and 35 in the upper Midwest.
“The northwest from Wisconsin to Minneapolis has the most snow…that’s enough to keep you on a budget while traveling,” FOX Weather meteorologist Britta Mervin said. What happened to driving at night.
If more than 4.6 inches of snow falls in Minneapolis, November 29 will be the snowiest day of winter weather.
Snow will ease on Wednesday as low pressure shifts north into Canada, but temperatures will drop after the storm. The highs around the Twin Cities will only be in the mid 20s and the lows will be in the mid teens.
“You may have some sun but it’s cold,” Mervin said, adding that if setting up holiday decorations is on your weekly to-do list, the sooner the better. “I would definitely recommend taking advantage of the 40th Monday.”
